I absolutely love Jess (MahoganyCurls)'s hair - if I was natural, I'd want my hair to look like hers. Even though I'm not, I still follow her on instagram & check out her YouTube page from time to time just to drool over her curls. This weekend I watched her Curls vs Curls video, where she compares the effect that two different products have on the same style - a twist & curl. I've never had great results with twist-outs, but inspiration set in... My inner PJ (product junkie) got me out of bed and to my local beauty supply store to buy perm rods (Diane 7/16" - $0.99) & Shea Moisture Curl Souffle ($15.99).
So about the souffle... I hate it & am annoyed I paid $16 for it. It has zero slip, making it difficult to work with my hair. Halfway through, I took everything out & started over, using Garnier Fructis Curl-Sculpting Cream Gel instead. It's like a conditioner & strong gel mixed in one, which my hair loves - the slippery consistency makes it a breeze to detangle & style my hair. Other than that, I followed her technique, twisting all the way down, then wrapping the ends on the perm rods (I used white ones). I took them down this morning and... hate it. The twists aren't able to stay tightly wound the same way a braid/cornrow can, so my roots were puffy, which I hate. My hair was crunchy & kind of stiff (I think more from the souffle than the fructis, but I'm not 100% positive), not soft with bounce/movement. It was shiny & the twist-out definitely did work in terms of shaping my hair, but I'm just not a fan. I'm considering officially retiring the twist-out & accepting it's just not for me... I really wanted it to work because it's so much faster to put my hair in twists, and it dried faster too, but I just hate the results. It's back in a ponytail until I wash tonight =(
