One of my super boring/predictable resolutions for 2014 is to get in shape. I don’t think I’m crazy out of shape, but I’m certainly not happy with where I am. I’ve tried so many other methods in the past – crossfit, boot camp, CARDIOCARDIOCARDIO, group classes, personal training, P90x… and none of them have given me results as fast as I want them. My two biggest obstacles are (1) Motivation & (2) Impatience. I’m SO IMPATIENT to see results that if I don’t see changes in a month, I get discouraged & go eat take out for 2 weeks. Seriously. I also HATE to work out, so motivating myself to go do it is really difficult. First world problems, I know, but I’m being honest. Working with personal trainers works best for me because feeling accountable to someone definitely helps with the motivation issues, plus having someone coach me through workouts when I just.want.to.die. helps a ton. That said, I’ve had issues in the past with trainers… usually one of the following:
- They work out of a studio & are expensive
- They work out of a gym, so I have to pay them AND pay a gym membership fee
- They’re affordable, but work out of your home, a problem because I don’t have a ton of equipment
- They’re affordable & freelance, but eventually sign on to work with a franchise gym like LA Fitness or Planet Fitness, which brings me back to #2.
This time around, while looking for a trainer that was affordable, convenient, and not tied to a gym, I came across Lift Training Studio (find them on Instagram), located in the Camac Center. I’m actually very surprised there aren’t more concepts out there like this in the city, because the structure is ingenious. It’s a large studio, filled with various weight-lifting equipment – free weights, barbells, and machines. Trainers pay a nominal fee to the studio per client, and in exchange have somewhere to train their clients. Each trainer sets their own rates, but they’re all affordable & much less than what you’d find anywhere else. No membership fees to pay, just whatever your trainer chooses to charge! It’s perfect for me, and literally couldn’t be more convenient – it’s located half a block from my apartment! I’ve finishing up my second week and am ALREADY SEEING RESULTS!! Which makes me super happy… and it’s ALL weight lifting, which surprised me. Here’s a quick video from leg day last week:
