It's tiiiiiiime for another Favorite Things giveaway! Last month I kept it local & gave away an entire Valentine's Day Date Night in my favorite neighborhood of Philadelphia, but this month I'm opening it back up to my amazing followers all over the country. I want to introduce you to a loyal, but now deceased friend of mine. This is the Elchim Professional 2001 Hairdryer, and I've had it for literally years!
A couple weeks ago while blowdrying my hair, the cord started smoking & sparking (scary!) I freaked out a little because I was rushing to get ready for an event & it was literally thee worst time to kick the bucket, but luckily some electric tape tightly wrapped around the area let me finish without catching on fire. Or leaving with wet hair. Equally bad.
But now, my beloved hairdryer has to be put to rest & a new one found.
I took the opportunity to test-drive some hairdryers I'd heard good things about, and thank god for Amazon.com's 2-day Prime shipping! P.S. I just got an email that the price/year is going up to $100/year instead of the $80 it has been for forever, but I don't care - so worth it. I buy everything on Amazon, and have it all shipped second day. I'm so spoiled now, regular shipping just won't cut it! Anyway, back to the dryers - I bought:
T3's Featherweight 2 (retail $200, on Amazon for $105) Elchim Professional's 2001 High Pressure Dryer (same as my old one, just in white - retail $125, on Amazon for $79) Turbo Power's Twin Turbo 3200 (retail $130, on Amazon for $93)
Ready to see how they stacked against each other? The winner definitely took me by surprise!
First up is the T3. If I was judging on looks alone, this baby would definitely win first place. T3 makes gorgeous products (see my review of the T3 Voluminous Hot Rollers), and this is no exception. Small details like a Swarovski crystal in the middle of the air filter (totally unnecessary but so cute!) and their signature faceted accents make me feel glam just by holding it. It came with a concentrator that securely snaps in place instead of just wedging it onto the nozzle & hoping for the best like some other models. The dryer is lightweight & didn't make me feel like I just did a mini arm workout while blowdrying. I really wanted this to be the best performer (because it's so pretty!) but it's not as fast & doesn't get as hot as my Elchim dryer does, adding a good 30-40 minutes to my drying time. I sometimes have to shower, wash my hair, dry & style it, get dressed, put on make up, and get to an event - all in less than 2 hours. I need a blowdryer that works fast. That's not to say that this is a bad dryer - my results were the same as if I used my Elchim, it just took longer. I did notice that I had fewer fly-aways with this dryer over any other one - because of that & the fact that it's not as hot & therefore gentler than the other three dryers, I'd recommend this to someone that cares more about being gentle when drying than getting it done quickly.
Overall: This dryer isn't as fast & doesn't get as hot as the other models, but the results are the same with the benefit of less fly-aways. If you're looking for a gentle dryer & don't mind taking a little longer, this is it!
Next up is a remix on my old favorite, the Elchim Professional. To be honest, I bought this just in case the other two didn't work well. My old Elchim was an awesome dryer, so I repurchased, just in white this time. I love this dryer because it's fast, powerful, and with a round brush, gets my hair sleek & straight. I also like the price point - $79 for a dryer that lasted over 7 years (my mom had it for 2 before I took it) is a good deal to me!
Overall: Affordable & durable, this is a favorite that I would buy or recommend in a heartbeat! This dryer gets hot enough to let you quickly blowdry with awesome results.
Last up is the Twin Turbo 3200 by Turbo Power. I bought this model because a friend with crazy curly, frizzy hair recommended it to me. She recently went to a salon for a cut & blowout, and the stylist used this dryer on her. She said it worked effortlessly to get her hair shiny & straight, and she's now able to do her hair in the morning before work instead of the night before like she used to. In February, when I was in Andre Richard's Salon with the winners of my Valentine's giveaway, there was an Elchim or Twin Turbo at every station - thought that was a pretty good sign! This dryer is fast! It blows hotter than my Elchim ever did, and I can get my hair done a little faster with this dryer. I don't worry about damage with the extra heat, I just hold the dryer a short distance from the brush I'm using and use a brush with a ceramic core. The core holds the heat from the dryer, and helps to straighten/smooth from both sides. This dryer is a little smaller & a lot lighter than the Elchim, but weighs a bit more than the T3. All of them are manageable, but the weight difference is nice on the arms!
Overall: Faster & hotter than both the Elchim & the T3, this dryer gets the job done fast! Make sure to avoid constantly pressing the nozzle against your hair, it gets very hot!
So - the winner? I shipped back the T3 & the Elchim, kept the Twin Turbo! I love that it's a little lighter than my previous dryer and that I can finish quickly when I'm in a rush. Any of these three would do a good job, but the Twin Turbo is my new favorite!
Here's a quick comparison of the three models before I straightened my hair. T3 (left), Turbo Power (middle), Elchim (right)
Before I talk about the giveaway details, I want to introduce one more hairdryer that I'm absolutely loving right now - Laila Ali's Soft Bonnet Ionic Hairdryer. I used it most recently when I experimented with flexirods, and sweet baby jesus this thing was fast! I'm used to (barely) sleeping overnight when doing a wet-set, but with this dryer I was fully dry in an hour! I slept like a baby, had amazing results, and am never going back to the old overnight toss-and-turn-and-hope-it's-dry-in-the-morning!
