I’m so not a lipstick girl – 95% of the makeup I wear is on my eyes. I’ve tried wearing lipstick in the past, but always feel so weird with it on & wipe it off before heading out. Part of that is because lipstick completely intimidates to me – I’d always be worried that it somehow found it’s way on to my face/teeth, or that it’s worn off & looks terrible. Not only that, but I don’t really think I have the lips for it. My sisters both have gorgeously perfectly full lips made for lipstick, but mine are not as full as theirs. Not to say I don’t like my lips because I love them, I just have never thought I pull off lipstick very well.
Two friends of mine know how I feel about lipstick, and have been doing their best to convince me to give it another go. Over drinks last week, they made me wear red lips while we were out, even catching me when I subtly tried to sneak & wipe it off. Finally, I (begrudgingly) agreed to really give lipstick a chance, and stopped in a couple makeup stores that weekend. Because I have no idea which colors would work & which would look terrible, I just bought whatever I thought looked pretty. Thank god for Ulta’s buy one/get one half off NYX sale. Seriously. Formula-wise, I stuck with mostly matte finishes – gloss is a whole different animal that I’ll tackle a different day. I have way too many swatches to share in one post, so I’m splitting them up formula by formula – first up is NYX’s Matte Lipstick line!
Before we get into the color, here’s my naked (gasp!) lips:
I have a ton of lip balms scattered around my apartment, office, and various bags, but lately I’ve been more or less consistently using EOS “Summer Fruit” balm. In between swatches, I reapplied lip balm because all that wiping was making me dry!
These are the shades I swatched, from left to right:
Pale Pink | Shocking Pink | Street Cred | Bloody Mary | Alabama | Perfect Red | Siren | Aria | Merlot | Angel | Temptress | Indie Flick | Pure Red
Overall, I actually liked a lot of these, which surprised me. They went on pretty opaquely, were buttery smooth, and definitely affordable at $6 each. I also liked that despite the matte finish, they weren’t drying at all!
WHEW! That’s a lot of lipstick! I don’t think I’m any better at choosing shades after that, but I do know that I don’t really like the pinkish, light colored nudes (Pale Pink, Temptress) & am iffy about the dark reds (Alabama, Siren). My absolute favorite of them all is Angel, hands down – such a pretty pink without being in-your-face, know what I mean? What do you guys think? Any I should absolutely, positively stay away from?
